Xu Tingmin, through the ‘Jeolla-do sacrificial ceremony’, creates a subconscious utopia that explores the sacred and religious moments experienced by humans in spaces and behaviors regarded as taboos. Based on field investigations of traditional ceremonies held by shamans in southwestern South Korea, she confidently interprets her research results, offering a unique perspective that transports us into a realm far from daily life.
In Jeolla-do shamanism, Xu Tingmin uncovers two fundamental principles: ‘improvisation’ and ‘repetition’. The improvised melodies are incredibly sensitive to the energy of space, with even air becoming a musical element. The structure, formed by continuous variations, echoes the sound world of traditional ceremonies, yet it also showcases Tingmin’s formidable artistic achievements and exceptional performances.
The combination of the 25-string Gayageum, shaman songs, and percussion crafts a unique and immersive experience. This fusion perfectly integrates Korean traditional music with modern improvisation. Xu Tingmin collaborates with Korean traditional singer Kim Yul-hee and percussionist Ryu Byeong-wook to deliver a flawless performance for the audience.
