The Global Geopark, known for its enchanting natural scenery, was listed in Lonely Planet’s ‘Top 10 Travel Destinations in Asia’ in 2016. It is located in the eastern and northeastern parts of the New Territories and is divided into two parks, ‘Sai Kung Volcanic Rocks’ and ‘North East New Territories Sedimentary Rocks’, with a total of eight scenic areas, showcasing a rich and diverse geological profile.
Although the park is small in area, it boasts acidic volcanic rock columns and demonstrates a geological history of sedimentary environments formed during the Paleozoic Era, from 520 million to 250 million years ago, which is both typical and rare. The volcanic rock columns are high in silica and acidic rhyolitic volcanic rocks, which are considered rare in the world in terms of scale and rock characteristics. What’s more, the volcanic rocks here exhibit both tuff and lava features, making them of great scientific research value. The park is open all year round, 24/7.Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark
