Among numerous submissions from Hong Kong artists, designers, and architects, the public art installation ‘Veins of Neon’ designed by YARD Architectural Design Studio was selected as the winning entry for the ‘Tai Kwun Neon Proposal Competition’ by a panel of experts. Inspired by the popular summer exhibition ‘Neon Continuation’ at Tai Kwun, the new exhibition ‘Pulse of Tai Kwun’ invites creators to use neon as a medium to create large-scale public art pieces, which are displayed within Tai Kwun, adding a picturesque scene to the main pedestrian walkway connecting the bustling Inspection Plaza and the tranquil Prison Yard.
‘Veins of Neon’ divides the 55-meter-long, 59-step Tai Kwun into three areas, conceived and designed by co-founders of YARD Architecture Studio, Kenneth Wong and Kei Ngan. The installation guides visitors through imagined 19th and 20th-century Hong Kong street scenes, evoking unique classic visual images of Hong Kong, such as locally made red plastic stools and chandeliers, old shop’s latticed shutters, indigenously designed red and white plastic bags, and Victorian-era Italianate arches, all presented through simple repetitive patterns of neon tubes. The realization of YARD’s challenging proposal was made possible thanks to several Hong Kong neon masters, including Man Wai Fong and Chung Kin Pui, and their decades of accumulated experience in the neon advertising and signage industry, as well as the exquisite craftsmanship that has been refined over the years, which continues to inspire a new generation of Hong Kong talents to carry on their neon creation practices. Audiences can download the Bloomberg Connects app to listen to the audio guide by artists Kenneth Wong and Kei Ngan, and under their guidance, visit these two rest areas in the bustling Central district – Inspection Plaza and Prison Yard. The exhibition is open from 04/11 to 04/10 from 08:00 to 23:00, with performance times and durations subject to the venue’s schedule.Hong Kong’s ‘Pulse of Tai Kwun’ Exhibition
