Hongcun Ah Ju is a live performance set against the backdrop of the picturesque natural scenery of Hongcun, with the story following the life of a Huizhou woman named ‘Ah Ju’. The narrative spans her selection for marriage, the joy of her wedding, her husband’s departure for business, and her bravery in defending their home against thieves, culminating in the triumphant return of her husband. It showcases the resilience, bravery, charm, and emotional depth of Huizhou women, as well as the hardships faced by Huizhou merchants abroad. The performance is divided into four acts: ‘Sweet Honeymoon’, ‘Reluctant Farewell’, ‘Guarding the Homeland’, and ‘Eternal Love’, artistically recreating the diligence, courage, steadfastness, and determination of Huizhou women. It subverts the traditional image of Huizhou women as enduring and lonely, presenting them instead as charming, witty, and brave, offering a refreshing perspective.
