Hu Shi’s Former Residence is located in Shangzhuang Village. It was built in the 23rd year of the Guangxu Emperor (1897). The main house faces south and is made of brick and wood, consisting of two sections with three rooms and two side rooms, forming a ‘return’ shaped corridor building. It covers an area of 208 square meters with a construction area of 350 square meters. The facade features two pillars with a single door and a first-floor style, adorned with brick carvings. Above the door, there is a black background with gold characters that read ‘Hu Shi’s Former Residence’, and below it hangs a portrait of Hu Shi in his middle age. On the east and west sides, there are tea tables and backrest chairs, with charts of Hu Shi’s direct relatives hanging on the walls. The western part is the room where Hu Shi married Jiang Dongxiu, equipped with a wooden bed, table, chairs, wardrobe, and stool. The front side room was where Hu Shi studied as a child. The eastern room and side room were used by Hu Jue (Hu Shi’s second brother). The main hall and the main side room display handwritten manuscripts and some works of Hu Shi’s family, the Hu family genealogy, calligraphy and paintings, poetry given by famous figures from home and abroad, and a ‘family portrait’ of Hu Shi. The back hall is relatively shallow, with a portrait of Hu Shi’s father hanging in front of the hall, and a photo of Hu Shi’s birth mother on the east side. The former residence also displays photos of Hu Shi from various periods. It is open all year round from 08:00 to 18:00, with specific opening times subject to the on-site announcement at the scenic spot.
