The Huaguoshan Scenic Area is located within the Xiyou Dongtian Scenic Area in Baiguo Town, Hengshan County. According to legend, after Sun Wukong disrupted the Peach Banquet and caused a great commotion in the Heavenly Palace, the Jade Emperor ordered Erlang Shen to capture Sun Wukong. After three hundred rounds of fierce battle, there was no clear winner. Later, while being chased by Erlang Shen, Sun Wukong entered the Xiangjiang River basin along the Guanjiang River.
He was attracted by a secluded place in Hengshan territory. Here, clouds and mist lingered, there were abundant flowers and fruits, and the flowing water gurgled. Tired and thirsty, the Great Sage Sun Wukong pressed down on his somersault cloud and drank water and ate wild fruits here. Coincidentally, the local villagers were infected with a strange disease. The Great Sage Sun Wukong used his monkey hair dipped in the stream water to cure the illness of the entire village. To express their gratitude for the Great Sage Sun Wukong’s lifesaving grace, many villagers here changed their surnames to Sun and named this treasured place ‘Huaguoshan’. The scenic area combines this myth and legend to create anew the Xiyou culture described by Wu Cheng’en and reproduce the wonderful episodes of ‘Journey to the West’. The entire scenic area is composed of scenic spots such as Huaguoshan stone carvings, Meihou Rock, Beauty Exposing Shyness, Lotus Sacred Realm, Ruyi Golden Cudgel, Bajie Stone, Qihuagu Valley, Pansi Cave, Wuxing Mountain, Three Attacks on White Bone Demon, Skillfully Crossing Tongtian River, Roll Call Ground, Yaochi Pond, Treasure Pavilion, Somersault Cloud Ladder, Water Curtain Cave, Guanyin Platform, Poluo Camp, and Pan Tao Garden.
