Huang Xiang, one of the renowned areas in San Fang Qi Xiang, is located to the south of Ta Xiang. It is connected to Yi Jin Fang to the east and west across the Nan Hou Street. During the Yongjia period of the Jin Dynasty, the Huang family from the Central Plains migrated to Fujian to escape turmoil and settled here, hence the name Huang Xiang. In the Tang Dynasty, Huang Pu returned to live here, and when Huang Chao’s army entered Fuzhou, they were so impressed by Huang Pu’s reputation that they ordered their soldiers to ‘pass by extinguishing torches’.
Over the generations, Huang Xiang has been home to many scholars and literati, making it a hub of culture and learning. Notable residents included Qing Dynasty Prefect Lin Wenying, the runner-up in the imperial examinations Lin Zhichun, Governor Li Fu, couplet master Liang Zhangju, Jinshi Chen Shouqi, Zhao Xin, and others. Within Huang Xiang, there is a courtyard known as ‘Xiao Huanglou’, which is under the protection of cultural relics. It is open all year round, accessible 24/7, with specific business hours subject to the day’s opening conditions.Huang Xiang: A Cultural Gem in San Fang Qi Xiang, Fuzhou
