The former residence of Huang Zunxian, a patriotic poet from the late Qing Dynasty, is named ‘Renjing Lu’, inspired by the verse from Tao Yuanming’s poem: ‘Building a hut in the human realm, without the noise of carriages and horses.’ It is located by the Zhoucreek, 3 kilometers east of Meizhou City, and was built in the spring of 1884. The three characters ‘Renjing Lu’ above the door lintel were written by the calligrapher, Ōya Naru. Inside the residence, there are flower beds, artificial mountains, fish ponds, Wu Bu Lou (Five Step Building), Shi Bu Ge (Ten Step Pavilion), Xi Ting (Rest Pavilion), Qi Zi Lang (Seven Character Corridor), Wu Bi Lou (Wall-less Building), Wo Hong Xie (Rainbow Pavilion), and a library, among other features. The winding paths and railings, along with the flowers and trees, create an elegant and serene atmosphere. In his later years, Huang Zunxian lived in Renjing Lu and composed a large number of poems, from which he selected and compiled the ‘Poetry of Renjing Lu’. In 1980, the local government carried out a comprehensive restoration of Renjing Lu. In 1985, on the 80th anniversary of Huang Zunxian’s death, people from all walks of life in Meizhou gathered at Renjing Lu to unveil a white marble statue of Huang Zunxian. This place is now listed as a key cultural relics protection unit in Guangdong Province. It is open all year round, from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00-17:30.
