Huanglong Temple, a renowned Buddhist temple in southern Zhejiang. It is said that at the end of the Tang Dynasty, Shi Jianshi from Huzhou, Deqing, was appointed as the governor of Chuzhou by the King of Wuyue, Qian Hao, for his military achievements in the early years of the Longji era (889). At that time, Lu Yue from Suichang had already occupied Chuzhou with his troops. Jianshi led his sons, Yueli, Yuequan, and Yueyan, to station in Jinyun, gathering righteous soldiers and setting up a camp at Huanglong Mountain to oppose Lu Yue. Jianshi, a devout Buddhist, built Huanglong Temple in the mountains in the third year of Qianning (896). In the fourth year of Tianku (907), in March, Qian Hao sent his sons Chuanxu, Chuanguan, and Chuanqiu, along with Jianshi, to capture Wenzhou. In May, Chuzhou was conquered, and Lu Yue was defeated, bringing peace to the region. Soon after, Jianshi resigned and settled near Qingtang at the foot of Huanglong Mountain. It is said that on the night of his ascension, he appeared in a dream to his three sons saying, ‘The current emperor has rewarded my merits, bestowing upon me the title of Jinziguanglu Doctor while alive, and posthumously ennobling me as the protector of Wudu Jialan.’ His sons followed their father’s wishes and sculpted a statue of the protector in the temple, renaming it the Protectorate Court. There is a poem by Zhao Rui from the Song Dynasty that describes Huanglong Temple: ‘Upon arriving at Huanglong, all worries vanish, as I revel in the company of the splendid scenery and the joy of admiration. The solitary orchid stands out, its fragrance overwhelming, as the morning rain ceases and the mist clears. The clear ice pond hides the world, while the distant chanting separates the dust. The clear wind and bright moon无人管束, entrusted to the freely spreading moss on the rocks.’ The temple is open all year round from 08:00 to 17:00.
