The nearly 400-year-old Huangsiyang Village in Duozhu Town was originally named Huangshi Village. It is 25 kilometers away from Huidong County seat. The ancient building complex in Huangsiyang Village was built according to the needs of governance and defense and has typical traditional Hakka cultural characteristics. It is said that the original four surnames of Xiao, Yang, Xu, and Zheng in the village all migrated and settled here from Zhangzhou, Fujian Province in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Later, it developed into a large enclosed village covering an area of 200,000 square meters with a large-scale architectural complex. There are city gates, temples, academies, and schools inside. The decoration is gorgeous and the craftsmanship is exquisite. It can be called the essence of folk architectural decoration in Lingnan. Huangsiyang Village reached its peak in the Qing Dynasty. According to the genealogies of the four surnames, there were more than 20 people who passed the imperial examinations for jinshi and juren at that time, leaving behind a large number of ancient cultural buildings such as Wu Kui Tower, General’s Mansion, and Hanlin’s Mansion. According to legend, the origin of the three characters ‘Huangsiyang’ engraved on the top of the west city gate tower is extraordinary. It was bestowed by the emperor to commend the Xiao family represented by Xiao Xianzhang and Xiao Fenglai in this village for their integrity and outstanding achievements in officialdom.
