Butterfly Island, a small island on the South Lake, covers an area of 12 mu. Constructed in memory of the 1930s Shanghai film queen Hu Die, who filmed ‘Salt Tide’ at the North-South Lake, the island resembles a butterfly in shape.

A pavilion named Shanhai Pavilion is built on the island, featuring an octagonal shape with 3 above-ground floors and 1 underground floor, standing at a height of 18.18 meters. From the base to the top, each level is open, and each side is transparent. Despite its small size, the pavilion encompasses the scenery of lakes, mountains, and seas.

The Listen to the Spring Teahouse is located on the southeast side of the island, next to the water, with two pavilions named Shuangfei Pavilion connected by a winding corridor over 10 meters long, providing an excellent spot for visitors to enjoy tea, rest, and appreciate the scenery.

Other architectural features on the island include the Lianli Pavilion and the Liangyi Pavilion. The walls, revetments, balustrades, and pathways of the island are all constructed with pebbles, exuding a leisurely and rustic charm, reminiscent of a hidden paradise and a return to nature.

Butterfly Island has become a garden-style exhibition platform integrating tourist sightseeing, interactive experiences, and organized visits. To commemorate the reform and opening-up and enrich the cultural connotations of Butterfly Island, the ‘Bu Xinsheng Reform Achievement Exhibition’ was arranged inside the pavilion in 2008. Through storytelling, it presents Bu Xinsheng’s事迹 in a simple yet profound manner, who is known for ‘cutting open the prelude to the reform of China’s urban enterprises with a pair of scissors’.

The island is open all year round from 08:00 to 17:00, with specific business status subject to the daily opening conditions.
