The old site of Humen Fort is distributed in places such as Dajiaoshan, Wushan and Dahushan on both sides of the Pearl River. After Lin Zexu destroyed opium, together with Guan Tianpei, the admiral of the navy, he mobilized the people to prepare for defense, reinforced and newly built 11 forts, and installed more than 300 cannons. Taking Shajiao and Dajiao forts as the first line of defense, Weiyuan, Zhenyuan, Jingyuan, Gonggu, Yongan, and Hengdang Qianshan Yuetai as the second line of defense, and Dahu Fort as the third line of defense, three lines of defense were organized.
In addition, two rows of wooden rafts and 372 zhang of large iron chains were set up in the Jiangxi area between Hengdang Island and Wushan to block enemy ships. In the Opium War, the British invaders were repeatedly repelled. At present, except for a few of the old sites of Humen Fort located in Panyu District, most of them are managed by the Opium War Museum. According to their geographical distribution, they are divided into two relatively concentrated groups, Shajiao Fort and Weiyuan Fort. Separate management offices for Shajiao Fort and Weiyuan Fort are established for management. Most of the forts are built with bluestone, lime, sand and yellow mud. The plane is circular or semicircular and is divided into two types: open-air platforms (i.e. bright platforms) and dark platforms. Weiyuan Fort is still completely preserved. It is built with granite, with a total length of 360 meters and a height of 45 meters. There are 25 gun emplacements. Each gun emplacement is 2.9 meters high, 4.2 meters wide and 6.6 meters deep. There are storage rooms and rest rooms for officers and soldiers beside the gun emplacements. The Tomb of Martyrs is located about 100 meters north of Shajiao Fort. In January 7, 1841, 75 officers and soldiers of the Qing army who died heroically when the British army attacked Shajiao Fort were buried here. The monument of ‘Tomb of Martyrs’ erected in June 1842. Now on Humen Fort, there is the ‘Tomb of Brave Soldiers’, where some of the soldiers who died fighting against the British army at that time are buried.
