Huojing Ancient Town is a civilized ancient town with a long history of nearly 1,500 years. Natural gas was discovered and used here since the Western Han Dynasty. It is also the hometown of Huang Chonggu, the female Number One Scholar.
In the Western Han Dynasty, the Huojing in Qionglai was used for the production of “boiling salt”, which was more than 1,600 years earlier than the recorded use in Britain in 1668. It occupies a proud position in the history of science and technology in China.

On the ancient town streets, there are still traditional handicraft workshops such as straw sandal making, cotton fluffing, blacksmithing, and hemp rope making. There are also historical and cultural monuments (scenic spots) such as the World’s First Well, Chonggu Mountain, Number One Scholar Bridge, Hebei Ancient Street, the ruins of the ancient county yamen, the Girls’ School, Haiwu, the former residence of the Chen family, and Xingfu Temple.

Especially, the “Haiwu” at the east entrance of the street, built in the 1930s, combines Chinese and Western styles. It is luxurious and mysterious and rarely seen. Its grand and imposing gateway, exquisitely carved flower windows of various shapes, imposing blue brick gables, anti-bandit gun holes on the back wall, and the corridors that are connected in light and dark like a maze are really amazing.
