The First School of Jiangnan primarily consists of two parts: a museum and a guild hall. The museum features one comprehensive display and six thematic exhibitions. The comprehensive display provides a synoptic overview of the development history of the Ningbo Group, which originated in the Tang and Song dynasties, continued through the Ming and Qing dynasties, transformed during the Republic of China, and integrated into the contemporary era. The thematic exhibitions classify and highlight the achievements of the Ningbo Group in shipping, finance, trade, industry, education, and other fields. The guild hall, as the main activity venue and spiritual home for Ningbo people at home and abroad, aims to enhance the camaraderie, affection, and attachment among Ningbo people.
The First School of Jiangnan is characterized by its waterside pavilion gardens and merchant culture landscapes. Its architectural style embodies the convergence of ‘Three Rivers’ and houses two major thematic sculptures and seven group sculptures representing representative industries. It fully showcases the ‘Yongzhou Spirit’ forged by the Ningbo Group over a century— the sentiment of ‘roots returning to the tree’, the pioneering spirit of ‘daring to be the first in the world’, the open-mindedness of ’embracing all rivers’, the integrity of ‘being practical without falsehood’, and the cooperative style of ‘focusing on business and valuing righteousness’.
