Jiangwan is an ancient village with a rich historical and cultural heritage, located in the northeast of Wuyuan County. The layout of Jiangwan’s architecture is highly distinctive, featuring one main street and six lanes crisscrossing each other. From the overlook of Houlong Mountain, the lanes form a massive ‘An’ character, which is truly awe-inspiring.
Upon entering the ancient town, one is greeted by the grand ‘Xiaojiang Ancestral Hall’, which is one of the largest in Wuyuan and even in Jiangnan, exuding royal grandeur. The hall is divided into four sections: the front courtyard, the front hall, the central hall, and the rear hall. The brick, wood, and stone carvings within the hall are lifelike and elegantly refined.

The people of Jiangwan take great pride in Houlong Mountain, which has been protected from any disturbance to its flora and fauna since ancient times, resulting in excellent ecological conservation. Entering Houlong Mountain feels like stepping into a primeval forest, with ancient trees covering the sky, adding much charm to the ancient village of Jiangwan, which is built against the mountain.

Jiangwan is a thriving center of culture and has produced many scholars and notable figures, including Qing Dynasty economist and phonologist Jiang Yong, Ming Dynasty Minister of Revenue Jiang Yilin during the Longqing era, and late Qing famous educator and Buddhist Jiang Qian, making it a well-deserved representative of Wuyuan’s ‘Land of Books’. The village still preserves Jiang Yong’s former residence, Sanxing Hall, Dun Chong Hall, Pei Xin Hall, and the four ancient gate pavilions of Donghe, Nanguan, Xian’an, and Beiyue, as well as Yue Fei Bridge constructed by Yue Wu Mu, and the Ming Dynasty Sword Spring Well, all of which are ancient Hui-style architecture worth visiting.
