Shanggangtang Village is located 25 kilometers southwest of Jiangyong County, in the Xiacengpu Town, 2 kilometers away from Provincial Road S325, 80 kilometers south of the tourist destination Yangshuo, and 125 kilometers from Guilin. According to the county annals of Yongming, in the sixth year of Emperor Wu of Han’s Yuanding era (111 BC), Xie Mu County was established in Shanggangtang, belonging to Cangwu Prefecture. It lasted for more than 700 years until the ninth year of Emperor Wen of Sui’s Kaihuang era (AD 589), when Xie Mu County was abolished and merged with Yingpu County to establish Yongyang County, moving the county seat away from Shanggangtang. The entire village is nestled against the mountains and waters, facing east towards the west, backed by the Pingfeng Mountain Range, with the clear Xie Mu River winding around the village. Most of the residential buildings in Shanggangtang Village are late Qing Dynasty architecture, featuring tall wind and fire walls, orderly deep layouts, exquisite central axis symmetry, large areas of blue water walls, adorned with undulating white belts, decorated with door pavilions and lattice windows, and the house is surrounded by protruding horse head walls, all of which are typical characteristics of southern Hunan architecture. The opening hours are from 08:30 to 17:00 all year round.
