This monument honors the historical feat of Jianzhen (688-763 AD), a native of Yangzhou and a prominent monk of the Tang Dynasty, who journeyed to Japan to spread Buddhist scriptures at the request of the Japanese Emperor. Despite five failed attempts, Jianzhen, with his disciples, embarked on his sixth voyage in the seventh year of the Tianbao era (748 AD). A hurricane forced them to land in what is now known as Zhenzhou (Sanya City), near the Ningyuan River mouth (present-day Daxiaodongtian Scenic Area). Jianzhen resided in Zhenzhou for a year, where he built the Dayun Temple and disseminated culture. Unwavering in his determination to spread the Dharma in Japan, he finally succeeded on his sixth attempt in the twelfth year of the Tianbao era (753 AD). The monument is open all year round, accessible 24/7.
