Kat O and Ap Chau to its west are ecological tourism resorts in Hong Kong. One can overlook the Yantian container terminal in Shenzhen. The ancestors of the villagers migrated southward from the end of the Ming Dynasty. They passed through Longgang (now the area of Longgang District, Shenzhen City), Yantian (a Hakka area by the North Sea in Shatoujiao, Shenzhen), and Xinhui (due to the mid-Qing Dynasty, around the middle and late 19th century, they moved to Kat O Island in Shatoujiao, Bao’an to escape the conflicts between natives and guests in the western Pearl River Delta). They then settled on today’s Kat O Island. People of different surnames live together. Due to the island’s shape like the Chinese character ‘之’, it forms a natural haven. Since then, it has mostly been inhabited by fishermen. The 1950s and 1960s were its heyday. At that time, about more than 10,000 people lived here. Later, many people went to Hong Kong, Kowloon or overseas to make a living. The Kat O people living abroad established the General Association of Kat O Compatriots in Europe in the United Kingdom in 1983 and there are branches in Scotland and Ireland. The island is located on the border between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Although it is not in a restricted area, the only way to reach the island is by taking a boat that needs to land at the restricted area of Shatoujiao Pier in Hong Kong. Non-native residents generally rent boats from places such as Sam Mun Tsai, Ma Liu Shui and Wong Shek Public Pier and go directly to the island for a short stay. Kat O has a Kat O Geological Education Center. The center displays fossil replicas from different periods. Rock samples are not separated by glass cases or fences, allowing people to experience the texture of rocks by hand. The Heavenly Queen sedan chair and costumes donated by the villagers of Kat O are also very precious.
