Jiaomen – A Historical Gateway in Beijing

Jiaomen is located 3 kilometers southwest of Yongdingmen. It served as a convenient gate for the ancient Nan Yuan, one of the nine gates, specifically designed for the nearby tenants to enter and exit the garden for their duties.

The village of Jiaobao, located to the west of the village, marks the northwest corner of the Nan Yuan’s enclosure at that time. Unlike the nine gates used by the emperor (such as the South and North Dahongmen), Jiaomen only had a small door and a guard house.

The names of Jiaomen and Jiaobao serve as a landmark for the scope of the Nan Yuan’s enclosure.
