It is said that Jiezhu Temple was originally the former residence of Wang Xizhi and is also called ‘Jiezhu Lecture Temple’. The temple is not large. It is famous because of a legend related to Wang Xizhi. Legend has it that Wang Xizhi had two hobbies. One is liking white geese, and the other is liking pearls. To make his ten fingers flexible and powerful and increase the momentum of writing, he wore a bright pearl with him and rubbed it back and forth in his palm from time to time. One day, Wang Xizhi stood by the pool, rubbing the pearl and watching the white geese playing in the water. Suddenly, a monk came to visit. Wang Xizhi casually put the pearl on the table and chatted with this monk friend. In the meantime, someone else came to see Wang Xizhi. So he asked the monk to wait for a moment and went out to meet another guest. Unexpectedly, when he returned, the pearl on the table was gone. Wang Xizhi suspected that it was done by this monk. Although it was inconvenient to say it clearly, a look of contempt showed on his face. The monk was unjustly wronged for no reason but had difficulty in defending himself. Before long, in the name of ‘sitting in meditation’, he starved to death without eating. Unexpectedly, a big white goose in Wang Xizhi’s family suddenly became listless and stopped eating and drinking. It died within a few days. The family members felt strange. After dissecting the goose’s intestines, they actually found that pearl. It turned out that on that day, the big white goose mistakenly swallowed the pearl as feed. Wang Xizhi deeply felt that he had wrongly blamed that monk friend. Thinking that he had actually hurt his very sincere friend because of a pearl, he was very sad. So he gave up his hobby of playing with pearls and donated his entire residence to Buddhism to build a temple to commemorate the monk and also warn himself. There is a special feature of Jiezhu Temple. In most temples, the statue of Wei Tuo is enshrined near the entrance. But in Jiezhu Temple, the statue of Wang Xizhi is enshrined.
