Jiming Island: A Hidden Gem in Weihai, Shandong

Jiming Island, once an obscure island, is known for its fishing community. It gained nationwide fame in 2013 as one of the filming locations for the popular parent-child show ‘Dad, Where Are We Going?’, sparking a desire among people to experience this idyllic retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Visiting Jiming Island primarily involves fishing, tasting seafood, admiring the island’s cliffs, and staying in traditional seagrass houses. The island is accessible throughout the year except during the winter when sea winds are strong.

Jiming Island is located in the northeastern coastal area of the Shandong Peninsula, about 1 kilometer northwest of Hutou Jiao in Gangxi Town, Rongcheng City, under the jurisdiction of Weihai. It is a beautiful and simple fishing village island. When viewed from above, the island resembles a rooster, hence its name. The best seasons for visiting Jiming Island are spring, summer, and autumn, from May to October each year. During these seasons, visitors can savor local delicacies and enjoy the unique scenery of the island.

Legend has it that long ago, Er Lang Shen was tasked with delivering rare animals to the Dragon King of the Sea. He carried a pole with a young donkey from the Western Regions in front and a rooster from the Northern Lands at the back. To avoid being seen by mortals, he traveled by night and hid by day. Due to unfamiliar roads and a delayed journey, as he was about to reach the East Sea, the rooster crowed at dawn, startling Er Lang Shen and causing him to drop his pole. In the haste to hide, the rooster fell into the sea and turned into Jiming Island, while the young donkey turned into Hai Lu Island. The two halves of the pole drifted with the current and stopped in the Zhifu area of Yantai, turning into Bian Dan Island.
