Jimingyi, nestled in Jimingyi Village within Jimingyi Township, Huailai County of Hebei Province, is a well-preserved ancient post city dating back to the Ming Dynasty. It lies approximately 130 kilometers by car from Beijing, offering a glimpse into a bygone era.
The city is encircled by an imposing ancient city wall, which sets the stage for the historical treasures within. Inside, a plethora of ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties awaits visitors. Notably, among these structures are the renowned old houses that once sheltered Empress Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guangxu during their flight. These historical dwellings are open for exploration, one by one.
Jimingyi City has also gained fame as a popular filming location for numerous movies, adding to its allure. The city itself is roughly square, with each side measuring about 500 meters, allowing for a leisurely stroll to take in the ancient ambiance. The city wall, a square structure, is adorned with many historical buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, while the other structures maintain an ancient and simplistic charm.
Despite the presence of residents who contribute to a strong sense of life within the city, tourism development has been relatively limited. This has resulted in a more dilapidated and messy appearance compared to other renowned ancient towns, yet this also gives Jimingyi a more natural and primitive feel.
Within the city, several famous buildings stand out, including the Temporary Palace of Empress Dowager Cixi, Taishan Temporary Palace, and Wenchang Palace. Additionally, a small exhibition hall is dedicated to showcasing the ancient postal culture. While wandering the streets is a pleasant experience, these buildings are the main attractions worth visiting during your time in Jimingyi. The Temporary Palace of Empress Dowager Cixi, also known as Hejia Courtyard, is a courtyard of relatively high specification within the ancient city, featuring five entrances. During the invasion of the Eight-Power Allied Forces, Empress Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guangxu sought refuge here. The courtyard has preserved its original appearance to this day, with portraits of both figures hanging inside, available for visitors to view. Each building within the courtyard holds its own unique history.
The Taishan Temporary Palace, alternatively referred to as Taishan Temple, was constructed in the eighth year of the Shunzhi era during the Qing Dynasty, boasting a history spanning over three centuries. The temple’s hall is adorned with remarkable murals, characterized by their vividness and layered imagery, which remain clearly visible to this day. Visitors are encouraged to explore these murals with care.
In addition to these sites, the Temple of Wealth and Wenchang Palace are also notable ancient structures within the city. Within these buildings, statues of Guan Gong and Confucius are respectfully enshrined, offering visitors the opportunity to pay their respects.
For those intending to visit Jimingyi Ancient City, most travelers typically arrive from Beijing and other locations. A visit to this single attraction allows for a day trip, with the possibility of returning on the same day. However, if one wishes to explore additional renowned sites in Huailai, such as Jiming Mountain and Tianmo Park, an overnight stay is necessary.
Accommodation and dining options are available in Jimingyi City, where local farmers offer rooms for approximately 50-80 yuan per night. The conditions are considered average, providing a basic yet comfortable stay for visitors. You can choose to stay in Xiahuayuan District of Zhangjiakou City or in Shacheng, Huailai County. These two places have relatively mature reception conditions and there are various grades of hotels and guesthouses for accommodation.
