Jin’ao Mountain is located 2.5 kilometers to the east of Chongming County seat. It is adjacent to Shou’an Temple, a famous temple on the sea. It is an artificial mountain named after the mountain where Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty arrived. The mountain body has long collapsed. The current Jin’ao Mountain was rebuilt in 1668. The mountain has nine peaks, and there are stupas on the peaks. It is a classical garden park on Chongming Island. Approaching the mountain gate, one can see several vigorous characters of ‘Jin’ao Mountain’ on the gate tower with characteristics of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Below is a figure of the customs of people in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, full of ancient charm. Walking along the west wall of Shou’an Temple and going inside, one comes to Zhenhai Tower, a scenic spot of Jin’ao Mountain. According to records, Zhenhai Tower was built in 1893. It was donated by large households in this county and is located on the peak of Jin’ao Mountain built in 1668. There was originally Guanyin Pavilion here, which was later changed to Canghai Pavilion. In the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, it was one of the ‘Eight Scenes of Aoshan’ called ‘Overlooking from Aofeng Peak’. This tower was rebuilt in 1986. There are nine floors in the tower. Climbing up the wooden ladder step by step, it is found that there are six small bodhisattvas enshrined on each floor. The higher one goes, the smaller the space becomes, just enough for one person to stay. Standing on the top of the tower and looking into the distance, all the scenes near and far can be seen at a glance. On extremely clear days, you can even see the beach in the distance. This is probably the origin of ‘Overlooking from Aofeng Peak’. Jin’ao Mountain also has the charm of gardens in the south of the Yangtze River. Although there is no longer the beauty of the original ‘Eight Scenes of Aoshan’, such as Qingyuantang, Guanyin Pavilion, Hanmo Forest, Zuihuaxuan, Jiashan Pavilion, Purple Bamboo Forest, Deyue Bridge, Shuixiang Pavilion, and Yuepu, it is equally delicate with clear water and trees and winding paths.
