Shao Piaoping’s former residence is located at No. 30 Wei Ran Hutong, Xicheng District, Beijing, which served as Shao Piaoping’s residence in Beijing after 1920. Shao Piaoping, the founder of ‘Jing Bao’, lived and worked here. He was a proponent of using journalism to awaken the consciousness of the people for the salvation of the nation. The residence is a two-story building that blends Chinese and Western architectural styles, facing west with typical European stone pillars on either side of the main entrance and a viewing balcony above the door.
The three characters ‘Jing Bao Newspaper Office’ above the main door were personally inscribed by Shao Piaoping. It was here that he made the vow to ‘make the government listen to the legitimate will of the people’ and became a journalist known for his ‘iron shoulder and sharp pen.’ The building has aged and the backyard is now filled with temporary structures, leaving us to infer the past from the old window lattices and mottled stone pillars. Opening hours: All year round, Tuesday to Sunday 09:00-12:00, 14:00-17:00; all day closed on Mondays; on New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day 09:00-12:00, 14:00-17:00, last entry at 11:30 in the morning and 16:30 in the afternoon; specific business status is subject to the actual opening on the day.Shao Piaoping’s Former Residence and The Site of the Jing Bao Newspaper Office
