In 1818, the 23rd year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty, Yao Sihou (1788-1865), a Huizhou merchant surnamed Yao, came from Nanyaozhuang, Tongcheng City, Anhui Province to Tianhuangping Town, Anji. He found an old house here which was a treasured land. So Yao Sihou bought the old house. After several generations of development, the Yao family became the leading wealthy family in the local area. In 1945, the New Fourth Army’s Jiangsu-Zhejiang Military Region fired the first shot in front of the Yao Family Courtyard, thus kicking off the prelude to the first, second and third counter-insurgency campaigns. After the founding of New China, during the land reform, some of the buildings here were given to local farmers to live in. Later, it has been used as a national grain depot. After the all-round development of the scenic spot of ‘Yao Family Courtyard’, in 2005, the Yao Family Courtyard officially opened its doors to welcome tourists. In addition to visiting the private garden architecture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, tourists can also visit three gardens and seven museums including Egret Garden, Anji Folk Customs Garden, Square Bamboo Garden, New Fourth Army Memorial Hall, Yao Family History Museum, and Chinese and Foreign Coin History Museum. Others include fireproof walls, Yixiang, Huaxia Wild Mulberry King, ruins, Jingjing, dancing, Yuanyang Pond, Xiaofeng, ancient apricot forest, Jiangnan Osmanthus King, Ming Dynasty rockery, Shengchun Terrace, Qianji Cave, suddenly enlightened, hidden gold cave, Xichun Pond, gallery, banana forest, Fudu, Rouge Well, totem pillar, winding path leading to seclusion, ancient drill ground, Harvest Terrace and other 24 scenic spots.
