Jinshanzui Fishing Village is one of the earliest fishing villages along the coastal land of Shanghai, located by the Hangzhou Bay, to the north of the Huhang Highway, just a stone’s throw away from the sea, and facing the Jinshan Islands across the water. The diverse and delicious seafood cuisine is a major characteristic of the village. The seafood food street and the fisherman’s inn snacks each have their own unique features, attracting an increasing number of tourists.
Jinshanzui is a famous fishing port in the Shanghai area, with a historically thriving marine fishery industry. At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, there were 36 shops and workshops in the small town, with more than 10 of them specializing in fishery products. During the spring and autumn seasons, when large fish and jellyfish are abundant, tourists and merchants gather to watch the tides, buy fish, and conduct business, creating a bustling scene on the sea embankment. In the 1980s, Jinshanzui Fishing Village reached its peak with over 1000 fishermen going out to sea, owning 45 fishing boats with a total tonnage of 1650 tons, and producing 1.16 million piculs of fishery products annually. The fishing range extended from Hangzhou Bay to the distant oceans, as far south as the Diaoyu Islands and as far north as Jeju Island in South Korea, making it a flagship in the fishing industry of Shanghai. However, since the late 1980s, the construction of numerous chemical enterprises has led to a large amount of sewage flowing into Hangzhou Bay, gradually depleting fishery resources. This resulted in boats being stranded on the beach and fishermen coming ashore. Most fishermen bid farewell to the sea that they relied on for survival, some went to work, some engaged in business, and some, who could not forget the sea, continued to fish in the nearby seas while also establishing aquaculture and fishery processing businesses on land. Some fishermen, taking advantage of the unique natural conditions, opened dozens of seafood hotels on the side of the Huhang Highway, forming a distinctive seafood street. The old street of Jinshanzui has been refurbished and now features a fishing village museum, a fishing gear development exhibition, artist studios, fisherman’s inns, and other venues and restaurants and hotels with distinctive maritime cultural characteristics. Together with the Jinshan Seafood City and the seafood street, they serve as a tourist attraction on the Jinshan Golden Coastline, revitalizing the ancient fishing village with new vitality.
