Jiuhou Mountain in Zhangzhou is located more than twenty miles northwest of Zhao’an County. It has been a popular destination for leisure and Buddhist worship since the Tang Dynasty, and its fame reached its peak during the Song Dynasty. According to the Song Dynasty’s ‘Zhangzhou Atlas’: Yu Gong’s common son was enfeoffed in Kuaiji, and his descendants entered Fujian and became deities after death, each governing a mountain, hence the name Jiuhou Mountain. Upon reaching the base of Jiuhou Mountain, one encounters steep cliffs with the words ‘Heaven Opens’ carved on them, and below are two giant stones forming a gateway. Passing through the ‘Heaven Opens Stone Gate’ and turning to the northeast path, one can see the words ‘Jiuhou Famous Mountain’ carved on the stone wall by Yuan Dynasty monk Faming Wuai, as well as inscriptions from many calligraphers of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Further east, one can see a giant stone resembling a human figure standing at the top of the mountain, with smaller stones next to it resembling bottles and jars, known as the ‘Three Treasures of Guanyin’. Visitors arriving at the ‘Three Treasures’ are also arriving at Jiuhou Zen Temple. This ancient temple was first built during the Tang Dynasty, rebuilt in the fifth year of Chunxi in the Song Dynasty (1245 AD), and renovated twice during the Qianlong and Guangxu years of the Qing Dynasty, with each renovation having a stele record. The stone arch above the temple’s mountain gate is engraved with the words ‘Great Famous Mountain’. Inside the temple, the main hall hangs a plaque inscribed with ‘Purification of the Heart’ by Huang Daozhou. Opening hours are from 07:30 to 17:30 all year round.
