Jiuzhe Mountain Scenic Area

Jiuzhe Mountain is located 37 kilometers southwest of Tiantai County, southeast of Mingyan. Characterized by its peculiar mountains and winding waters, the area is shrouded in mystery and charm, with ancient trees, bridges, caves, and paths at every turn. Due to its remote location deep within the mountains, it has limited contact with the outside world, resulting in a simple and honest local culture, earning it the nickname of Tiantai’s ‘Wulingyuan’.

The name ‘Jiuzhe Mountain’ originates from the nine mountain ranges that stand in the way along the nearly 5-kilometer creekside mountain road from the Zheshankou to Dongjiang Village, forming nine obstructions. Each ‘zhe’ features a distinctive rock formation, named as follows: ‘Azure Dragon’s Tongue’, ‘Carp Transforming into Dragon’, ‘Lion on the Wall’, ‘Rising Crescent Moon’, ‘Two Eagles Dancing Wings’, ‘Solo Dragon Playing on the Beach’, ‘Tiger Descending the Mountain’, ‘Tortoise and Snake Interacting’, and ‘Yellow Dragon’s Back Mark’.

Within the mountains, there is a scenic spot called the Yifu Temple, also known as the Fairy Emperor Hall by the locals, where an annual temple fair is held. Inside the temple, there is a statue of Fan Zeng. The Tianzhu Peak of Jiuzhe Mountain is surrounded by peculiarly shaped mountains, some resembling a roaring lion, others like a soaring dragon, and some like swords piercing the sky. Below the strange peaks, there are crisscrossing fields, babbling brooks, winding ancient roads, and lush bamboo, presenting a picturesque rural scenery.
