The Kaifeng Drum Tower is located at the southern end of Shudian Street. It was first built in 1379, the twelfth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty. The drum towers on the east and west are symmetrical and on the same line, very majestic and neat. In the late Ming Dynasty, the then governor of Henan Province believed that the bell tower and drum tower destroyed the feng shui of the yamen, so he ordered the positions of the bell tower and drum tower to be exchanged.

Therefore, the positions of the bell tower and drum tower in Kaifeng are opposite to the ancient system. But at the end of the Ming Dynasty, the Yellow River burst and the bell tower was flooded. In 1671, the then governor of Henan Province demolished the damaged bell tower. Since then, there has been no bell tower in Kaifeng, only the drum tower. The Kaifeng Drum Tower has been preserved since it was built in the Ming Dynasty.

Until Kaifeng was liberated in 1948, it was destroyed in the war, leaving only a base platform. In 1976, even the base platform was demolished. The drum tower seen today was rebuilt in 2013. The square in front of the drum tower is the location of Kaifeng’s night market and also a must-visit place for tourists coming and going to Kaifeng. When night falls, on both sides of the square, snack trucks of uniform specifications are neatly arranged in the catering area.

The loud shouts and soft calls, and the clinking of tableware become a major highlight of Kaifeng. Here, you can taste Kaifeng’s special bean jelly and small steamed buns, as well as delicious snacks from all over the country.
