Kowloon is a center for commercial and industrial activities in Hong Kong, with districts such as Yau Tsim Mong, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Mong Kok housing numerous large shopping malls, hotels, small shops, and restaurants. The former Hong Kong airport, Kai Tak Airport, one of the world’s busiest airports, is now transformed into a recreational park in Kowloon. The Victoria Harbour, one of the world’s third-largest natural deep-water harbors, lies between the Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island. The eastern and western parts of Kowloon are densely populated industrial areas, while the northern part is residential and the southern part is known for its famous commercial district.
Kowloon’s bustling areas include commercial centers such as Tsim Sha Tsui Center, Empire Center, Good Time Center, and Nanyang Center. Shops of various types are closely packed, making it a shopping paradise for tourists. Hotels in the area include The Wharf Hotel, Harbour Plaza, and Shangri-La Hotel. Kowloon is home to many shopping malls, including Sun Plaza, Sun Arcade, and New World Center. Among them, Harbour City is a super large shopping mall, located near Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier, consisting of four parts: Ocean Centre, Harbour City, Harbour City Horizon, and Ocean Terminal, containing over 400 restaurants and shops, two cinemas, and a large toy company Toys ‘R’ Us. There is also an observation deck offering panoramic views of Victoria Harbour. There are smaller shopping malls catering to the youth, including Paris Tower, Liberty Plaza, and Chongqing Station next to the Chongqing Mansion. In September 2005, Takashimaya Department Store opened a branch in Tsim Sha Tsui’s Fashion Walk. The Western Harbour View Building houses Hong Kong’s only cruise terminal, capable of accommodating large cruise ships. It also has a shopping mall, which was one of Hong Kong’s largest in the 1960s. Kowloon is a melting pot of exotic cultures: Chongqing Mansion, known for its South Asian and African communities, feels like entering India upon entering the building. The Peninsula Hotel, a luxurious five-star hotel with British ambiance, is located opposite the Space Museum, offering rooms with panoramic views of Victoria Harbour. Its English afternoon tea is very famous, and the ground-floor shops are primarily high-end women’s brands. Kimball Street is home to many Korean restaurants and food supermarkets. On Nathan Road and Ashley Road, one can find Turkish, Russian, and Italian cuisines. Tsim Sha Tsui, being a tourist area, is filled with foreign tourists, giving a sense of being in a foreign country. The entire area is open all year round, 24/7, with specific business hours subject to daily operations.Must Read
