Laolongwan Scenic Area is located in YeYuan Town, 10 kilometers south of Linqu County, Weifang City. Anciently known as ‘Xunye Lake’, it is formed by the convergence of underground springs. The area is named after a legend that there is a spring eye in the bay directly connected to the East Sea with a divine dragon dwelling within. It is famous for its extraordinary springs and lush bamboos.

Laolongwan has a long history, recorded in ‘Commentary on the Water Classic’ during the Northern Wei Dynasty as ‘Xunye Water has become a famous site’. In the sixth year of the Longqing period of the Ming Dynasty, Feng Wemin, a master of Sanqu (a form of Chinese lyric poetry), returned to his hometown after resigning from office and built a house on the Xunye water, naming it ‘Ji Jiangnan’ (today’s ‘Jiangnan Pavilion’), where he lived until his death.

The scenery of Laolongwan is beautiful, with distinctive features in each season, especially in winter. During the cold winter, the bay is filled with mist, creating a fairyland-like atmosphere, forming the spectacle of ‘Yeyuan Misty Warmth in Winter’, and is acclaimed as ‘Jiangnan of the North’ and listed among the ‘Seventy-Two Famous Springs of the World’. Historical records show that since the Spring and Autumn period when the famous swordsmith Ou Yezi cast the ‘Longquan’ sword here, many historical figures such as Confucius, Emperor Qin Shi Huang, Liu Zhang, the Han Zhuxu Hou, the Northern Wei geographer Li Daoyuan, the Northern Song Dynasty’s famous minister Kou Zhun, and the literary scholar Fan Zhongyan, along with the Ming Dynasty calligrapher Xue Shu, have visited Laolongwan, leaving behind numerous literary and calligraphic works.
