LiKeng is a small village surrounded by mountains, with vast rapeseed fields in front of the village. In spring, the hills are covered with golden flowers. The village’s streams and rivers are flanked by many Hui-style ancient buildings with grey walls and white tiles, which are very simple and clean. The village still preserves the former residence of Li Zhicheng, the military scholar of the Southern Song Dynasty.
Climbing up the mountain along the path behind the village, one can overlook the entire LiKeng. The village has arched bridges, pavilions, temples, and courtyards. After entering the village, there are shops lining the streets, mainly selling local Hui-style wood carvings and Longwei inkstones, as well as numerous ‘agritourism’ options for accommodation and dining, with specialty dishes such as Huadu Stone Chicken, Qing Dun Hebao Carp, and LiKeng Steamed Chicken. There are many tea houses and hotels along the river, where Bayberry wine and LiKeng Glutinous Rice Wine are both very tasty. Among the residences, there are also many ancient dwellings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, with exquisite carvings inside. A river runs through the entire village in sections, and one can take a long bamboo raft to wander through it. LiKeng is an ancient village primarily inhabited by the Li surname, located 12 kilometers from the county town of Wuyuan. LiKeng has always been a place of flourishing culture and talents. From the Song to the Qing dynasty, there were hundreds of officials and wealthy merchants, and the village’s literati left behind 29 works that have been passed down through the ages.
