The Li Shutong Memorial Hall is located in the Hupao Dream Spring Mountain Forest Park. Originally, there was Dinghui Temple here, which is the place where this modern artist and patriotic eminent monk became a monk and practiced. Li Shutong is one of the pioneers who opened up a new era of Chinese modern culture. He was the first to participate in the performance of ‘civilized drama’ (stage play).
He also created new songs for the landscapes of West Lake. Among his disciples are outstanding figures such as Feng Zikai. Nowadays, the Xiling Seal Engravers Society houses his seal carvings and the handwritten Sutra pillar of the Amitabha Sutra. Behind the Hupao Spring pool is the tomb tower of Master Hongyi. The memorial hall is divided into three exhibition halls. In the center of the main hall is a three-meter-tall bronze statue of Li Shutong. On both sides are two large reliefs titled ‘Detachment’ and ‘Conversion to Buddhism’. The exhibits showcase Li Shutong’s life story and his history of becoming a monk, and display his artistic achievements, Buddhist attainments and patriotic spirit. In the display cabinets are the lyrics written by Li Shutong and the long out-of-print ‘Collection of Cool Songs’; dozens of precious photos provided by Li Shutong’s granddaughter; calligraphy copies imitated by Li Shutong, and physical objects such as books, seals and handkerchiefs he used. In the left hall, there are Li Shutong’s calligraphy treasures, including eight handwritten stone tablets and ten wooden engraved mottos. In the right hall is the ‘Book Nest’, hanging paintings and calligraphy works such as Xu Beihong’s oil painting, Feng Zikai’s woodcut, Fei Xinwo’s portrait of Hongyi, and Qian Jun’s couplet.
