The Liaojin City Wall Museum has a construction area of 2,500 square meters, with one floor above ground and one floor underground. Its shape is like a majestic ancient castle. It is built on the basis of the Shuiguan site of the southern city wall of Zhongdu in the Jin Dynasty. It is a professional archaeological museum that combines underground ruins and historical displays. The underground part is by far the larger ancient capital shuiguan site in China and is an important example for studying ancient architecture and water conservancy facilities in China.
The exhibition hall on the first floor above ground is divided into five units, namely the discovery and excavation process of the shuiguan site, the architectural structure and value of the shuiguan, and the evolution process of urban shuiguan buildings in China. The whole building of the museum is in an irregular polygon shape. The outer wall is bluish-gray, the roof is covered with gray tiles, and there is an animal head decorated under the eaves of the city wall crenel. The basic exhibition in the museum, ‘The Development History of Beijing Capital’, consists of several parts such as ‘Beijing before the Liao and Jin Dynasties’, ‘Nanjing of the Liao Dynasty’, ‘The City Wall of Zhongdu in the Jin Dynasty’, ‘Palace City’, ‘Urban Layout’, ‘Water Transport’, and ‘Beijing after the Jin Dynasty’. It displays historical relics of various characteristics, the discovery and excavation process of the shuiguan site, and physical objects, photos, charts, etc. of the shuiguan’s architectural structure and value. It presents the excavation situation and research results of the ruins, as well as the development history of Beijing centered on Zhongdu in the Jin Dynasty.
