Lin Hejing’s Tomb: A Poet’s Legacy by West Lake
Located at the northern foot of Gushan, to the east of the Fanghe Pavilion, and facing the serene West Lake, stands the tomb of Lin Hejing. Lin Bu, also known as Junfu, was a prominent poet of the Northern Song Dynasty, born in Qiantang, which is present-day Hangzhou, Zhejiang. He lived from 967 to 1028.
A Life of Solitude and Love for Nature
Lin Bu’s life was marked by illness and a commitment to bachelorhood, remaining a commoner throughout his existence. Before turning 40, he embarked on extensive travels within the Jianghuai region. In his later years, he chose to live in seclusion on Gushan in Hangzhou, where he found solace in the company of plums and cranes, affectionately referring to them as his “wife” and “children.”
The Legend of Plum Wife and Crane Children
Lin Bu’s love for these two elements of nature led him to plant 300 plum trees around his residence on Gushan and to raise cranes. This eccentric yet endearing act gave rise to the legendary tale of “Plum Wife and Crane Children.” He reveled in his hermit life, reportedly not venturing into the city for two decades.
Fame and Literary Exchanges
Despite his reclusive lifestyle, Lin Bu’s fame reached far and wide, attracting scholars and literati who sought his company. The court acknowledged his contributions by bestowing gifts of grain and silk, and directed local officials to look after him. He engaged in poetic exchanges with notable figures such as Fan Zhongyan and Mei Yaochen.
Posthumous Honors
Lin Bu passed away in the sixth year of the Tian Sheng era (1028) at the age of sixty-two. Posthumously, he was titled “Mr. Hejing,” and his collected works were compiled into “The Collection of Mr. Hejing.”
