Lingfeng Lecture Temple is one of the monasteries in Jiangnan, originally built during the Later Liang Dynasty of the Five Dynasties (907 AD), with a history of over eleven hundred years. Its Buddhist culture has a profound influence, and the geographical ecological environment is unique, with the temple filled with spiritual energy. Located in Anji County, Zhejiang Province, the Lingfeng Mountain Scenic Area is home to towering ancient trees and historical sites such as Yinxin Pond, Diaoyue Pond, Meihua Stream, Xianren Terrace, Bao Tree Spring, Anyang Spring, Tanjing Stone, Shenzhou Gorge, Yingyun Pond, and Huayan Cave.
Among these, the Lingfeng Lecture Temple stands out. The records state: ‘The temple was built because of the peak, and the peak is known because of the temple. The peaks are lofty and the forests are deep and serene, with pine and bamboo thriving in the mountains, and winding paths with flowing springs.’ Hence, Lingfeng Mountain is a sought-after tourist destination. Known for its unique Lingfeng, Lingyan, Lingchi, Lingquan, Lingmu, and Lingsi, it is renowned worldwide and can be described as a mountain full of spiritual energy. The tourist attractions feature the ‘Lingfeng Thirty-Two Scenic Spots’ characterized by spirituality, antiquity, elegance, and seclusion, with the ‘Lingfeng Top Ten Scenic Spots’ particularly captivating to many visitors, making it an ideal place for returning to nature and resting. Lingfeng Mountain boasts numerous ancient and famous trees, with bamboo growing everywhere, especially the impressive ancient tree group in front of Lingfeng Temple, covering hundreds of acres, with tall and peculiar tree shapes, which are very rare. The mountain’s peculiar peaks, strange rocks, and extensive caves, along with clear streams and springs, are another characteristic of Lingfeng Mountain. There are peaks such as the hundred-meter-tall peak, the majestic peak, the independent peak, the five-lotus peak, and the twin-breast peak, each with a distinct shape and spirit. Rocks include the ‘broad and flat, a hundred feet wide, climbing which one can reach the clouds’ Wangyun Terrace, the recitation platform where Master Yilun chanted scriptures day and night, and the Lingfo Stone, which resembles a Buddha sitting upright. There are also natural caves such as Jinxian Cave, Zhuxian Cave, and Huayan Cave, each with its own wonderful legends. On both sides of Lingfeng Mountain, the Dongqing and Meihua streams are embedded in the gorges, with rapid, clear, and crystal-clear waters flowing ceaselessly throughout the four seasons. The Yingyue Pond, on clear nights, reflects the moon’s image, which is charmingly clear; the Beitianmu at the mountaintop, with its deep and broad pool, never dries up throughout the year. There are also other springs and ponds such as Huanxi Spring, Anyang Spring, Yingyun Pond, and Zaoyue Pond, all with clear and sweet water.
