Lingying Temple, originally known as Zimaoyan, was first established during the Later Tang Dynasty of the Five Dynasties period (circa 923-936 AD), making it over 1000 years old. It honors the physical Buddha, Master Li Wenyu, who is revered as one of the ‘Three Real People and Six Patriarchs’ of Southern Fujian. The building with red tiles is the Memorial Hall for Master Hong Yi. From October 1940 to April 1941, the modern eminent monk Master Hong Yi stayed at Lingying Temple at the invitation of its abbot, Master Dingmei, to write an inscription for the restoration of the True Body Pagoda of Lingying’s Patriarch. During his residence, he also composed many fine couplets and poems, leaving behind numerous precious calligraphic works.
In early 2002, the Mahavira Hall was constructed to enshrine the Buddhas of the Three Lifetimes. Above it, the Quanzhou Guanyin Pavilion was built to honor the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara. The architectural feature of the Guanyin Pavilion is its ceiling design, which resembles a spider’s web with its wooden structure.

The temple is open all year round from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with specific operating hours subject to the day’s opening status.
