Linyang is a part of the Nanbin Subdistrict in Rui’an City, Zhejiang Province. Known as a typical water town in southern Zhejiang, some scholars have referred to it as the ‘Venice of Southern Zhejiang’. The total area of Linyang is 8.7 square kilometers, with river areas accounting for 1.9 square kilometers and pond areas covering 800 acres. The region is characterized by its dense network of rivers, with dozens of rivers of varying sizes winding around the town, offering clear and beautiful water quality.
Composed of numerous small islands in the rivers, Linyang features over 300 bridges of various sizes, connecting the islands and forming a single entity, with several lakes of different sizes within the islands. The ratio of river area to land area is 1:3. For thousands of years, the local residences have been built along the rivers and next to bridges, adding a graceful charm to Linyang and revealing the leisurely flavor of a water town. During the Yuan and Ming dynasties, Gao Zecheng, the founder of southern Chinese opera, once lived in Ge Lane Town; renowned scholar Jin Mingchang, famous southern Zhejiang educator Jin Rongxuan, and our country’s paleontologist Wu Xianwen, among many other cultural celebrities, have all resided in this ancient town.
