Li’s Ancient Courtyard, a well-preserved ancient residence with a typical Southern Hunan residential architectural style, spans an area of 7100 square meters. It is one of the oldest, well-maintained, and largest ancient residences in Qiyang and Yongzhou, known as Li’s Ancient Courtyard. The courtyard is built with its back to the mountain and facing the water, reflecting the harmonious integration of architecture with the natural landscape characteristic of Southern Hunan. There are currently 36 well-preserved houses, 17 pavilions, and 36 large halls. The buildings are of brick and wood structure, featuring upturned eaves, carved beams and rafters, and an antique charm. The courtyard’s skywells serve both for ventilation and lighting, as well as for waste and flood drainage. The layout of the houses is orderly, with an emphasis on air circulation and ventilation, and there are alleys between the main and side houses that are accessible in all directions. Originally, Li’s Ancient Courtyard was composed of the Old House Courtyard, the Bamboo Hanging Courtyard, the Upper and Lower Courts, and the Character-shaped Study House. The existing Li’s Ancient Courtyard refers only to the Upper and Lower Courts and the Li Family Ancestral Hall. Most of the houses in the entire courtyard are arranged in a straight line, forming a rectangular shape that is longer from east to west and shorter from north to south, with each household connected and orderly. The Upper and Lower Courts form an interconnected whole, with pavilions, alleys, or eaves connecting each other. The ground inside the ancestral hall is paved with blue bricks, the beams and columns are made of rough materials, the column bases are mostly stone, and the wooden columns are made from ancient trees. According to villagers, there are a total of 48 such ancient wooden pillars in Li’s Ancient Courtyard, and it is said that they will produce 48 great officials. The tall halls, exquisite carvings, and high-quality materials have become another symbol of the family’s glory. Exquisite Woodcarving, Stone Carving, and Money Tree Carvings in Li’s Ancient Courtyard are all very exquisite. The entire courtyard has more than 1200 flower windows and 150 column bases, all of which are finely carved and beautiful, with no repetition. This grand and well-preserved ancient architectural complex has attracted many tourists in recent years to explore and visit ancient sites. The opening hours are from 08:00 to 18:00 all year round, and the specific business status is subject to the actual opening conditions on the day.
