Lishi Hutong is located in the southeast of Dongcheng District, Beijing. It starts from Dongsi South Street on the west and ends at Chaoyangmen Nanxiaojie on the east. During the Ming Dynasty, this area belonged to Sicheng Fang and was called Donkey Market Hutong, also known as Mule Market. It is said that this place was once a donkey and mule market. In the late years of the Xuantong period of the Qing Dynasty, it was renamed Lishi Hutong.
The home of Prime Minister Liu Luoguo (Liu Yong) is in this hutong. Lishi Hutong is a deep alley. There is a thick shade at its depths. On both sides are gray walls and roof tiles. There are many large houses. Courtyard No. 43 in the hutong is the former residence of Jingxin, a grand scholar of the Qing Dynasty. Courtyard No. 129 is the mansion of Bin Jun, the magistrate of Wuchang at the end of the Qing Dynasty. Liu Yong’s mansion is at the west end of the hutong. Courtyard No. 129 in Lishi Hutong is a very grand quadrangle. This courtyard is facing south. There are three gates facing the street. The courtyard is composed of a residence and a garden, covering an area of about 1200 square meters. It is of a large scale. On both sides of the gate are an eight-character-shaped screen wall. The upper part of the screen wall and the long street wall is carved with extremely gorgeous brick carvings. These brick carvings are exquisitely crafted. It is said that such brick carvings cannot be found even in the Forbidden City. This is also one of the shooting locations of the TV series ‘The Grand Mansion Gate’.
