Liuzao Town, situated in the central hinterland of Greater Pudong, features a unique geographical layout. The northern part of the town extends in a peninsula shape, connecting with Chuansha New Town. To the east, it is bordered by Zhuqiao Town, and it is a mere 8 kilometers away from the international airport. The town is also adjacent to Xuanqiao Town in the south and Zhoupu Town in the west.
Historically, around 1070 AD, most of Liuzao was still submerged under the sea. However, the Yangtze River carried sediment that was deposited southward along the coastline. By around 1140 AD, the land was essentially formed. In 1172 AD, after the construction of the seawall in Pudong, the land became stable. The name “Liuzao” is derived from the ancient term for ‘salt stove’. It was the sixth in local ranking, hence the name ‘Liuzao’. As the coastline extended eastward, the once saline area transformed into cultivable land, ushering in a period of agricultural development.
Liuzao Town is open to visitors all day, every day of the year.
