Liyuan is a national 5A-level tourist attraction. It is a garden villa originally built by Mr. Xie Weili, an overseas Chinese in the United States, in the early 20th century. Based on the Grand View Garden depicted in ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’, it cleverly combines the charm of classical gardens with the architectural characteristics of contemporary popular villas in Europe and America, presenting a unique architectural art beauty.
It is highly renowned among gardens privately built by overseas Chinese in China. Liyuan has the reputation of ‘Little Grand View Garden’. Its artistic conception is ‘small bridge, flowing water, and people’. The layout of the park is divided into three areas: large garden, small garden, and villa area. Each area is self-contained and separated by an artificial river or wall, and connected by a bridge pavilion or a corridor leading to the sky.
It can be said that there are gardens within gardens and scenes within scenes, which are thought-provoking. The famous calligraphy couplets inlaid in it add a rich cultural connotation to Liyuan. A large number of exquisite plaster carvings and murals full of romantic and legendary colors make people feel as if they are in a fairyland.
