Longmen Ancient Town is located on the south bank of Fuchun River. It is a large settlement of descendants of Sun Quan. The ancient town is roughly divided into ten parts, including tracing the origin of the ancient town, nostalgia of the old street, families by the brook, traces left a hundred paces away, the moonlit inkstone pool at night, and the great ancestral hall of the Sun family. Here is not only a scenic area but also a relatively primitive living area. There are no row upon row of shops. Instead, simple local people live here, and many well-preserved ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties are still retained. The movies ‘The Barber’ and ‘Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains’ were once filmed here. The town is not large and can generally be visited in about two hours. Entering the ancient town requires buying tickets. The main entrance ticket includes all the attractions in the town that need ticket checking. There are several excellent ancient buildings in the ancient town, including not only civilian houses but also ancestral halls, large courtyards, stages, archways, towers, etc., with a complete range of types. The more famous ones are the Hundred Steps Hall in ‘Traces Left a Hundred Paces Away’ and the Sun Family Ancestral Hall in the ‘Great Ancestral Hall of the Sun Family’. The ancient town can be entered throughout the day. After the ticket-selling time, there is no need to buy tickets, and the attractions in the town cannot be visited. However, just walking around casually in the ancient town is not bad.The deep, ancient alleys of Longmen Ancient Town are perfect for capturing very artistic photos. On the streets, one can often witness locals leisurely drinking tea, playing cards, and chatting. This scene is so captivating that many tourists find themselves more interested in experiencing the local customs than in simply admiring the buildings.
Upon arriving at Longmen, you’ll first notice the archway marking the entrance to the ancient town. Once inside, you’ll find an old street lined with pebbles, which is where the majority of restaurants and small shops are located. This is the heart of the ancient town’s commercial life.
What makes the ancient town even more charming is strolling along the Longmen Brook, observing the daily life of families living by the water. The essence of the ancient architecture can be found near the inkstone pool, where a circle of buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties encircle the dark green waters, creating a picturesque scene.
The recommended route for exploration is to walk along the old street to the Longmen Brook, then follow the brook back to the inkstone pool, and finally return to the old street in the north. This path ensures that you won’t easily get lost and allows you to visit the main attractions of the ancient town.
While visitors to Longmen Ancient Town typically do not stay overnight, they almost always indulge in the local delicacy known as Sun Quan gluten. This gluten, in addition to containing meat, also includes dried bamboo shoots, leeks, and carrots. It is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and has a delightful taste. Best of all, it is very affordable, costing only a few yuan each.Longmen Mountain, located to the south of the town, is an excellent destination for hiking enthusiasts. The mountain boasts a picturesque landscape and an altitude exceeding 1,000 meters, which typically takes hikers about 4 to 5 hours to ascend. The trail is quite steep, demanding considerable physical effort, so it’s advisable to carry some dry food with you.
