Longshan Island is a large island in the central lake area of Thousand Islands Lake, primarily known for its cultural attractions. The island features Hai Rui’s Memorial, Shixia Academy, Banmu Square Pond, and Bell Tower, among others.
When boarding the island from the east pier, one can see a wide staircase leading to the mountaintop. At the front is a memorial arch inscribed with the word ‘Longshan’. It is said that this arch was originally a gift from the emperor to Fang Fengchen, a Chun’an native who became the top scholar during the Southern Song Dynasty.
In front of the arch are three levels of platforms, each supporting two thick dragon pillars, totaling six. Further to the east, the ancient building that catches the eye is the Hai Rui Temple. During the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, after Hai Rui’s term ended and he left Chun’an, the local people erected a ‘Departure Memorial Tablet’ and built a temple in his honor to commemorate his diligent and clean governance.
The current Hai Rui Temple on the island was built in 1985. The front hall of the temple has a tablet corridor, with most inscriptions written by famous calligraphers from past and present. In the rear hall stands a nine-foot-tall statue of Hai Rui, with a set of Chinese paintings on the left and right walls reflecting his governance achievements.
Ascending from Hai Rui Temple, one can enjoy the chirping of birds, the fragrance of flowers, and lush greenery. After walking up about five hundred stone steps, one can directly reach the Ninggu Bell Tower. One can overlook the scenic views of Thousand Islands Lake from here, making it an excellent spot for sightseeing. The island is open all year round, with entry services provided from 08:00 to 12:00 only; no entry is allowed outside these hours.
