Longtan Dragon Mother Temple is a type of temple for praying in various coastal cities of Guangdong, with distinctive regional characteristics. Located in Xingtan Town, Foshan, it is believed to have been built around 1368 AD. Due to the favorable weather and abundant food supply in the local area, the villagers felt the vast grace of ‘Dragon Mother’ and jointly funded the construction of this temple. After more than 600 years of vicissitudes, the temple still stands firm, allowing the people of Foshan to admire it.
After the reform and opening up, with the improvement and enhancement of the living standards of the people in Foshan, sports have gradually become popular, and the annual dragon boat race came into being here. Locals celebrate the Dragon Mother’s birthday on the fifth day of the eighth lunar month as the day of the dragon boat race, also known as the ‘Water Town Festival’. At this time, colorful dragons from all over the place gather at the Dragon Mother Temple to participate in the worship, with drums beating and colorful flags flying, filled with the joy of the water town people, attracting tourists who come to share in the grand event.
