Kaifeng Longting is a well-known tourist attraction in the ancient city of Kaifeng and also a representative of Kaifeng’s cultural relics and historic sites. However, this is not a pavilion. It is actually a palace built on a huge green brick platform base as high as 13 meters. Nowadays, Longting, together with Yangjia Lake and Panjia Lake, forms Longting Park. Here was once the site of the imperial palaces of the Later Liang, Later Jin, Later Han, Later Zhou, Northern Song and Jin Dynasties. Longting faces south and is located high on the platform base. There are 72 steps from the ground to the main hall. In the middle of the steps are stone steps carved with cloud and dragon patterns. After climbing onto the platform and entering the hall to view the exhibited cultural relics, you can overlook the scenery of the ancient city of Kaifeng in front of the stone railing. In front of Longting is a straight avenue. Beside the avenue are two lakes facing each other east and west. The east one is Panjia Lake and the west one is Yangjia Lake. On the west side under the steps of Longting, there are several side halls. Inside the side halls, there is a wax museum reflecting the history of the Song Dynasty. The major events in politics, economy, culture and other aspects during the reign of the nine emperors of the Northern Song Dynasty are presented by nine groups of wax figures. The wax figures are carefully designed according to historical facts. The most eye-catching among the wax figures is a group of wax figures about Wang Anshi’s political reform, with only three main characters. Sitting on the imperial throne in the middle is Zhao Xu, the sixth emperor of the Northern Song Dynasty. He is wearing a light yellow dragon robe and a red jade belt around his waist. His head is slightly turned to the left, looking at a minister sitting on the left. And he listens attentively to his speech. This minister is Wang Anshi who was promoted to prime minister by Emperor Shenzong of the Song Dynasty and advocated political reform. Sitting on the other side is another minister, Sima Guang. He is against political reform and is deep in thought at this time. Every year in golden autumn October (mid-October to mid-November), as the main venue of the world-famous Kaifeng Chrysanthemum Culture Festival, the layout of Longting scenic area is magnificent. Thousands of characteristic varieties of chrysanthemums compete for beauty. When visiting Longting, tourists also have the opportunity to watch historical drama performances with the background of Song court culture, such as ‘Nine Emperors Greeting Guests’, ‘Variety Shows Entering the Imperial Palace’, ‘Relinquishing Military Power with a Cup of Wine’, ‘Wang Anshi’s Political Reform’, ‘Substituting a Cat for a Prince’, etc.
