Lufeng Temple, formerly known as Tianzhu Essence House and Tianzhu Mountain Temple. It was once named Nantianzhu. It has always been a Buddhist sanctuary for Avalokitesvara and is known as a famous temple in Yuezhong. In 1990, Zhao Puchu, the president of the Buddhist Association of China, personally inscribed the plaque of ‘Lufeng Temple’. Lufeng Temple is located on the other peak of Kuaiji Mountain, Xianglu Peak, in the southeast corner of Shaoxing City.
The site of the temple was initially only on one side of the peak at an altitude of 354 meters. Here, the cliffs are towering, huge rocks surround it. It twists and turns like a snail and stands upright like a pillar, resembling a furnace tripod. Believers built pillars on the rocks and built a temple on the peak. The halls and pavilions reach into the clouds. Since 1989, the temple has been rebuilt. After twenty years of planning and scheming, cliffs were cut to open roads, stones were taken to lay the foundation, halls were built and towers were erected. The temple area is unprecedentedly vast. By the summer of 2006, the temple area gradually rose from the northern foothills to the peak. It is four miles long, covering an area of a hundred mu. The building area is 20,000 square meters. Six halls, seven buildings, six pavilions and one tower have been newly built, towering up and down Lufeng. The mountain gate hall, Heavenly King Hall, Mahavira Hall, the second floor of the bell and drum tower, the abbot’s courtyard and the planned Tripitaka Sutra Depository are surrounded by corridors. Lufeng Temple is rebuilt and shines brightly. The Buddhist buildings are magnificent and shine brightly in Yuezhong. The rebuilt Lufeng Temple is a large Buddhist architectural complex. It is built along the mountain, taking advantage of the terrain. It is magnificent and stretches naturally. At the foot of the mountain are the Mahavira Hall, Heavenly King Hall, Sanmen Hall, bell tower, drum tower, Thanksgiving Hall, Huixian Building, abbot’s courtyard, Tripitaka Sutra Depository (under construction), east-west wing rooms and release pond. On the mountainside, there is the Four-Faced Avalokitesvara Hall (also known as the Seeing Heart Avalokitesvara Hall) and incense-burning room. At the top of the mountain are the Avalokitesvara Hall, Three Saints Buddha Hall, Dabei Building, divination room, monk’s quarters and guest hall. The whole temple is four miles long, covering an area of a hundred mu and with a building area of more than 20,000 square meters. In 1990, Zhao Puchu, a Buddhist master and the president of the Buddhist Association of China, personally inscribed the plaque of ‘Lufeng Temple’. At the top of the mountain, there is a plaque with the inscription ‘Great Compassion Covers All’. It was written by Cai Yuanpei, a leading figure in the academic world (the original has been lost). Contemporary calligrapher Shen Ding’an, a lay Buddhist, rewrote it.Opening hours: 08:00 – 17:00 from January 1st to December 31st.
