Luzhoufu Chenghuang Temple

The Luzhoufu Chenghuang Temple is located in the western section of Anqing Road, Hefei City. It is the temple of Luzhoufu in the Qing Dynasty. The Luzhoufu Chenghuang Temple was first built in the third year of Huangyou in the Northern Song Dynasty (1051). In 1854, during the Taiping Rebellion, Hefei was attacked and the temple was destroyed in the war. In 1871, local officials raised funds for reconstruction, but due to lack of funds, the construction was suspended halfway. In 1879, Li Hezhang, the younger brother of Li Hongzhang, came forward to raise donations for the continued construction. In the past, flagpoles stood in front of the grand temple, stone lions at the mountain gate faced each other. There were 3 rooms at the mountain gate and 5 side rooms on each side; there were 5 rooms for the opera tower and 4 side rooms on each side; there were 3 rooms for the main hall and 3 side rooms on each side; there were 12 east-west wing rooms between the main hall and the opera tower. There was an iron incense burner in front of the main hall. Inside the hall, there was an image of the city god. In the side rooms, there was an image of the city god’s wife. Ten halls of Yama are enshrined in the east and west, and there are facilities for the underworld’s criminal justice. In the old days, during the Spring Festival and the birthday of the city god on July 29th of the lunar calendar every year, officials of all sizes from Luzhoufu and Hefei County, as well as devout men and women, would come to burn incense and worship. There would be continuous performances of the opera ‘Mulian Rescues His Mother’ on the opera tower to repay the gods. Small vendors and tourists would also flock here, and the temple street would immediately become a busy market. In the 1950s, the stone lions at the mountain gate were smashed, the statues in the temple were completely removed, and the ancient buildings were also damaged. Only the mountain gate, opera tower, main hall, and empress hall and other buildings remain. The specific business hours and opening status are subject to the opening situation on that day.
