Ma Pao Quan is located under the artificial mountain on the east side of Li Qingzhao Memorial Hall in Baotu Spring Park, Jinan. The spring pool is irregular in shape and slightly rectangular. The pool is 12 meters long and more than 5 meters wide. The pool bank is built with dissolved limestone rocks, winding and undulating, and staggered. The spring water flows out from the crevices in the rocks and flows northeast along the brook at the bottom of the pool and into the moat (West Luoshui River). Around the spring pool, there are jagged rocks and green trees, which make it extremely elegant and unique.
The name of the spring is derived from the legend that ‘at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, General Guan Sheng of Jinan fought against the invasion of the Jin soldiers and sacrificed heroically. His mount angrily pawed the ground and a spring gushed out’. It is said that in the third year of Jianyan in the Southern Song Dynasty (1129), the Jin soldiers marched southward and attacked Jinan. Liu Yu, the prefect of Jinan, was cowardly and afraid of death and wanted to surrender the city.

His subordinate general Guan Sheng firmly advocated war. Guan Sheng led his army and repeatedly defeated the Jin soldiers. However, in the end, under the pincer attack of the Jin soldiers and Liu Yu, he died in battle outside the west gate of Jinan. When Guan Sheng’s war horse saw its master in distress, it neighed towards the sky. Its front hooves continuously pawed the ground. As a result, a clear spring gushed out.
