Mai Po Nature Reserve is located in the wetlands of Yuen Long, featuring a vast mangrove area. The reserve is home to a multitude of precious flora and fauna, as well as a large number of insects, birds, and mammals. Twice a year, during spring and autumn, a significant number of migratory birds travel between Northern China, Mongolia, Siberia, Southeast Asia, and Australia, stopping over at Mai Po. More water birds reside here during the winter, making this the optimal time for birdwatching at Mai Po. The reserve is designated as a restricted area and entry is not permitted without permission; thus, joining a guided tour organized by the World Wildlife Fund chapter is an excellent way to explore the area. Following the guided tour, visitors can visit fish ponds, birdwatching houses, wildlife habitats, and floating bridges, where they can observe various species of migratory birds. There is also a chance to encounter endangered species such as the Black-faced Spoonbill and the Black-faced Gull. Especially in the mid-winter period, one can witness the spectacular sight of tens of thousands of water birds in the Back Bay area. The reserve is open all year round from 9:00 to 17:00. Essential tips for visitors: 1. Once the group tour is successfully booked and paid for, the activity date or time cannot be changed. 2. Please wear plain-colored clothing and light footwear for easy walking. 3. It is imperative to follow the rules within the reserve: no smoking and no littering to protect the natural ecological environment. 4. Do not touch plants with your hands and avoid contact with bird droppings. Please disinfect the soles of your shoes and clean your hands upon exiting the reserve.
